Today I got this question from a reader:
I want to record a phone interview with someone in our industry and put the audio on our web site for people to listen to. I’m thinking about using Skype for the online call, and then using PowerGramo to record it. I couldn’t find any recording technology built right into Skype.
Once I have an audio file, how do I embed it into my web site, so that it is more of a streaming audio file, rather than something that someone has to open up with whatever media player is on their computer? Or would you recommend that we post the file online and people have to use their own media player?
My response:
There’s a service called Utterli.com that offers an embeddable media player. I’ve used it a lot and I like it a lot. As long as you have access to the Code/HTML view of your web pages, you should be able to use it. Just upload a WAV or MP3 file and Utterli will give you a few embedding options. Choose the one you like, get the code, and paste it into the Code/HTML view of your web page.
I also recommend Audacity audio editing software. It will allow you to cut audio files to take out long pauses and to clip the ends off your interview if you have dead air. It’s a free open source software available at sourceforge.net.
