A new Philips device in development could force TV viewers to watch ads. From the article:
“An invention from Royal Philips Electronics prevents TV viewers from switching the channel during commercials or fast-forwarding past commercials when watching DVR content. Viewers would be released from the freeze only after paying a fee to the broadcaster. The freeze would be implemented on a program-by-program basis, giving viewers a choice at the start of each one. “
Great. Let me guess: The next big breakthrough will be an apparatus that keeps your head oriented towards the television accompanied by a seatbelt that keeps you tethered to your La-Z-Boy or sofa and splints that prop your eyes open for the duration of the program.
Hey, this gives me some great non-dues revenue ideas!
How about we charge an additional fee for conference registrants to attend unsponsored lunches and events? Ooh, a higher subscription fee to receive our magazine with no advertising! And, we can rent to our members some special sponsor-blocking goggles for the duration of conventions, releasing them from having to see sponsorship logos.
Well, I thought it was funny.

I like your ideas Ben. They are funny and not half bad. I think we could run with some them. Let’s just call the streams they produce something other than “non-dues revenue” okay? How about “return on innovation revenue?”
